Last night I went with mom and the twins to the Derby concert at Waterfront park. Brett Dennen, Mason Jennings, and some other guy. It was great—the weather was nice, everybody was sitting in the grass, very groovy. I loved Brett Dennen even before seeing him live (for free) but last night really solidified our relationship. He’s got this long red hair and sounds kind of like Mike Tyson without the lisp. We had to leave before Mason Jennings finished his set (the babies were tired) but it was pretty great too. Brett was a much better showman—dancing around, talking to the audience, etc., but Mason Jennings has some fantastic songs. If you’ve never heard him, imagine if Lou Reed and John Prine had a baby, that baby would grow up to sing like Mason Jennings.
Also, on a mostly unrelated but still musical note (heh), I’m a little peeved that WLRS has recently changed formats. The station has had to change channels frequently—because of changes in ownership, I think—and has even gone off the air for long periods of time, but this is the first time, in my memory, that the station has undergone a format change with the same channel and call signs. And it’s no good. It used to be fairly reliable for playing new alternative-ish rock, but I heard the Eagles on it yesterday. And Bob Seger. And Rod effing Stewart. Luckily, I’ve gotten pretty absorbed in public radio (I know, I KNOW), but it’s still sad to know that a little more of Louisville’s indie rock spirit has died.
