This afternoon I was finally offered a regular position in the department where I’ve been temping since February. I’ll be working with the Lauras as a “Compliance Certifications Specialist,” doing mostly data entry and a few special projects for conferences and such. The work’s not going to be terribly interesting, but the job security, health insurance, and tuition remission are well worth it. I like the idea of having a job that doesn’t completely consume my life right now, as graduate school undoubtedly would. I haven’t completely ruled out the possibility of going back to school—with 6 free credits/semester, I’ll definitely take some classes—but at this point, being a full-time PhD student is really unappealing. Maybe it’s my disparate interests that make me so unwilling to commit to a life-career right now; I’m grateful for the time and opportunities a low-impact 8-5 job provides for extra-curriculars.
